Meet Sam
At 8 years old I was diagnosed with Leukemia, a cancer of the blood, which the doctors said the best way to save my life was a bone marrow transplant. This was very encouraging, but the odds of finding someone who would be a match for me was not. Even today the likelihood of an African-American finding a match is about 17%. After an unsuccessful family and national registry search, thankfully chemotherapy did the job. When I relapsed 2 and a half years later, a bone marrow transplant seemed to be the only option that would keep me from dying. I never found a match but by God’s grace, an experimental transplant from myself worked and I am still here today. The pure miracle of my survival has inspired me to dedicate a large part of my life to making sure patients don’t have to go through the same thing as my family and I; and to be honest, I’d like to think that if needed someday, there would be a match for me.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to share the stories of blood related disease and cancer patients through art.
The Make Me a Match Project is an organization dedicated to recruiting members for the bone marrow donor registry. M3P works to raise awareness about Leukemia and other blood related diseases and the need for bone marrow donors nation-wide. M3P is spreading the word through the arts, entertainment and social media networks with an emphasis in minority communities. The Make Me a Match Project will also include a patient advocacy program geared towards newly diagnosed patients and their families, preparing and educating them about the journey of living with a blood related disease.
About M3Project
The Make Me A Match Project was founded by Samuel Roberson out a need to save the lives of patients suffering from Leukemia and other blood related diseases. The shockingly low number of people on the national bone marrow donor registry, particularly amongst minorities says that more needs to be done as far as recruitment. We believe that it is not the fact that people don’t want to join the registry or donate bone marrow but they are unaware that they have the power to save lives and unaware of the process of doing it.
The Make Me A Match Project is commited to changing that by raising awareness and defying the myths of the registration and donation process. By doing this through arts, entertainment and social media networking, we believe people will be more susceptible to not only listening but understanding the power that they have and be inspired to use it by joining the registry and becoming a potential donor.
